A Popol Wuj Variorum

What is a Variorum?

A collection of all of the variants of a given text, e.g. the Ximenez transcription and translation of the K’iche’ Mayan text.

Each text is connected to its source element by element.

  • An element is a unit of text, such as a paragraph, sentence, folio side, folio line, series of words, word, etc.

The foundation of the variorum is the collocation table, a table that maps every element to its source.

Once collected, these data may be used to generate graphs depicting the genealogy of translation for a given element of a translation.

This will allow scholars to conduct close readings of the texts and investigate the scholarly decisions made in producing a given translation.

Plan

  • Collaborate with Shakespeare Variorum Project at Texas A&M University with Katayoun Torabi) and Laura Mandell, Professor of English at Texas A&M University, Director of the Center of Digital Humanities Research at TAMU, and Director of ARC.
  • Create TEI versions of all translations within scope.
  • Create collation (text map) of all element pairs.
